West Coast Recess

“West Coast Recess” is a school practice supported by Fraser Health recommendations, which emphasize the benefits of fresh air and physical activity for children’s physical and mental well-being. Students are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, including rain gear and a change of clothes, and many schools provide covered areas for shelter from heavy rain.

Why schools adopt West Coast Recess:
  • Physical and mental health benefits:
Outdoor play provides fresh air, exercise, and reduces sedentary time, which is crucial for cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, and overall health.

  • Improved mood and focus:
Spending time outdoors can improve mood, reduce anxiety, and help children sleep better by regulating their internal clocks.

  • Connection to nature:
Outdoor play fosters a connection to nature and develops mindfulness.

  • Learning opportunities:
Weather conditions offer natural learning experiences, such as exploring water flow, building dams, and observing nature.

What it means for students:
  • Go outside daily:
Students will go out for recess and lunch breaks every day, rain or shine, unless there are exceptionally stormy or inclement conditions.

  • Dress appropriately:
It is essential to dress children in rain jackets, rubber boots, rain pants, hats, and layers to stay warm and dry.

  • Bring a change of clothes:
Students should keep a spare set of dry clothes, including socks and underwear, at school.

Do not fall prey to the myth that a cold can be caught or prolonged by going outside in the rain or cold. This is simply not true. Besides, if you are dressed appropriately you will be toasty warm and dry!
